Stories that will keep you captivated
Handa’s Surprise
It’s 25 years since Handa’s Surprise was first published.
This beautiful book, written and illustrated by Eileen Browne, was a firm favourite with both of my daughters and their classmates. And it’s no surprise (excuse the pun) that it continues to be extremely popular with young readers.
It tells the story of Handa, a member of the Luo tribe of south-west Kenya. She puts seven different fruits in her basket as a surprise gift for her friend Akeyo but, unbeknown to Handa, her walk to Akayo’s village takes her past several crafty fruit-loving animals.
The book is packed with vibrant illustrations that will make you laugh out loud and wish you could taste the mouth-watering fruit.
Look out for Handa’s Surprise in your local library, in bookstores and online.
You’re strong with me
I recently came across a stunning picture book written by Chitra Soundar and Illustrated by Poonam Mistry.
You’re Strong With Me is a tale of discovery as a baby giraffe learns about her grassland home under the watchful eye of her mother.
The illustrations are mesmerising. Children and adults alike are sure to be captivated by the intricate patterns.
This is the third picture book created by Chitra Soundar and Poonam Mistry and follows on from their equally beautiful You’re Safe With Me and You’re Snug With Me stories. Look out for them all in your local libraries, bookshops and online stores.
Just like Handa’s Surprise, I predict that You’re Strong With Me will become a timeless children’s classic.
